Netflix has placed an excellent fantasy franchise in limbo by quietly canceling its most recent series. While the streaming giant often makes sweeping announcements about which shows will not continue with additional seasons, that’s not always how things work out. From time to time, Netflix quietly puts a pin in a project and keeps an eye on how it continues to perform long after the premiere. If nothing stands out, a green light never happens. So, while a TV show may never be loudly and officially canceled, it could still be dead in the water.
This seems to be what has happened with Netflix’s adult animated series, Castlevania: Nocturne. This show, based on the video game franchise, is intended as a sequel to Netflix’s Castlevania, which ran for 32 episodes between 2017 and 2021. This first four-season installment to the animated TV franchise was a fair success, with a 94% critic approval rating reflected on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s therefore no surprise that Netflix followed the conclusion of Castlevania with Castlevania: Nocturne, which was even more successful with critics than its predecessor.
Castlevania: Nocturne earned an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes in its first season, and when season 2 hit Netflix in January of 2025, 100% of critics approved. All that praise and excitement suggested that the official announcement for Castlevania: Nocturne season 3 would arrive any day after the sophomore season’s release. Unfortunately, it has now been a year and a half, and there is still no word. After so long, it’s difficult to imagine Netflix would have confidence that audiences would return in large enough numbers.
So, despite a total of 48 well-received episodes, the Castlevania franchise is stranded. It’s both puzzling and frustrating, since Nocturne even made it into Netflix’s Top 10 after season 2 premiered in 2025. Apparently, that wasn’t enough for the streaming platform, and if it didn’t have enough faith in the viewership back then, a year and a half is unlikely to instill additional confidence. This may be the end for Castlevania.
Is There Any Hope For The Castlevania TV Franchise?
It’s difficult to say just what Netflix was looking for with Castlevania: Nocturne. Season 2 got the green light relatively quickly, and it was widely reported that this installment had higher viewership than season 1. If this is the case, then why on earth did Netflix withhold the go-ahead? What was the purpose of diving into a sequel series to leave things unfinished?
The unfortunate truth is that adult fantasy animation will always have a relatively niche audience. As much as that fan base loves it, a franchise like Castlevania will never perform as high as Netflix’s more mainstream hits. This means Nocturne hasn’t become a priority for Netflix. Resources are being directed elsewhere while the streaming platform does the old wait-and-see.
Netflix had a big year, wrapping up its flagship series, Stranger Things. Now that this massive endeavor is out of the way, the company may begin working on its backlog. However, chances are Netflix won’t remember Castlevania: Nocturne unless subscribers give it a reason to. Season 3 will only happen if Netflix concludes there is a sizeable viewership ready to tune in.
The best way to send this message to Netflix is to watch Castlevania: Nocturne and share the news about this excellent show. With renewed social hype and a good handful of one-and-a-half-year-later views, the streaming giant is sure to recognize that it is in its best interest to bring that creative team together to work on new episodes. It’s a tall order, but for the sake of the Castlevania franchise, it might just be worth the dedication.
