The year 1998 may go down in history as one of the greatest years in gaming. Sure, if you can remember playing games back then, then your knees probably hurt when it’s raining (like me), but the quality of games that came out that year is astonishing. Not only did we get games like Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, Banjo-Kazooie and Resident Evil 2, we also got one of the greatest RPG adventures of all time. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time first burst onto our small screens in 1998, and we’ve been uncovering its secrets ever since.
One such secret that you may not have known (I know I didn’t) is a hidden area in the final dungeon. Thanks to commentors on X, we’ve now learned of this secret area in the late game. The lead up to challenging Ganondorf is exhilarating, and many eager adventurers may have rushed past this hidden area without even realizing. Once entering the castle, there is a drop to the side of the stairs in the main hall. If you drop down and turn back on yourself, there is a small hidden room to discover.
The room is easily missed, but for those who find it, there are plenty of treasures for the completionists among us. Inside the room, you’ll find lots of fairies to collect and a bunch of those pesky deku scrubs popping up and down. If you uproot them though, they offer items you can but which is nice. Purchasable goods combined with some life-saving fairies might be exactly what you need to give you the edge in this late-game dungeon.
Of course, to some hardcore fans, this is not news. Many in the thread revealed that this was old news to them and that plenty of the game’s dungeons have hidden rooms similar to this. One such commentor said:
You already knew in 1998, if you had a closer look in the game. There were also tips in the game. Fire temple and Dodongo’s cave etc. also have hidden rooms. So that’s not unusual with Ganon 😅
While another revealed a great tip for clearing out the hidden room quickly:
It’s a fairly well known spot. Did you knew you can use the Megaton Hammer to force all the Business Scrub at once just by hitting the floor?
With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time being almost 28 years old, it’s still amazing that some of us fans are learning new tips and hidden secrets all these years later. With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake officially coming later this year, it will be great to see if all these hidden treats make it into the new version of the game. Will the remake be a 1:1 remake or a reimagining? Time will tell.
With it being the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise, it’s nice to see that we’re still seeing new content for these games and perhaps learning new tricks we didn’t know before. Now that we know The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is officially coming soon, what’s next? A Majora’s Mask remake would certainly get the fans hyped. Hopefully, Nintendo have a few more secrets up their sleeves to reveal before the year is out.
