The announcement that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be getting a full remake this year was undoubtedly a bit of a watershed moment in gaming overall. The original is widely seen as one of the best games of all-time, and its return on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a momentous occasion, regardless of how much you care about it personally.
Happily, it seems like there are plenty out there who are still invested in it overall, and the hype around its November release is second only to Grand Theft Auto VI. Now, it seems we’re starting to get some tangible evidence for just how popular the game is going to be, as physical releases have started to sell out in certain countries.
As first reported by IGN Brazil, high demand for physical editions of Ocarina of Time have seen it sell out in a number of retailers in the country, though it’s worth noting that scalping remains a problem. That news comes thanks to an interview with Gamer Hut commercial director Ricardo Vieira, who broke down exactly what patterns the retailer has been seeing as it relates to the game:
“We already had confidence in the game, but no one on the team, even with experience in major releases, imagined that the batch would sell out so quickly. For us, this result deserves the attention of the entire market. It shows that we still need to better understand the size of the demand for physical media. My perception is that the events of this year have also made more people look at their collections and the possibility of not having certain physical games in the future. They want to ensure that major releases are part of their collection, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is proof of that.”
The physical edition of Ocarina of Time is particularly appealing to fans because it includes a foil cover that could easily serve as a collectors’ piece in years to come. As briefly alluded to above, it also comes at a time when the continuation of physical games media is one of the most pressing issues in gaming.
Sony’s stated intention to move away from physical releases was undoubtedly the straw that broke the camel’s back, but both Nintendo and Xbox have significant digital output as well, and the former had already largely moved to a “code in the box” alternative.
Happily, physical editions of the Ocarina of Time Remake are available from other retailers, even in Brazil, so don’t despair if you’re planning to get your hands on one. It might even end up being the best new release you can play in November, if Nintendo really delivers and Rockstar lets the side down massively.
