PlayStation Plus Price Cut Offered As Gamers Cancel Subscriptions In Protest

PlayStation Plus subscribers who decided to respond to the recent run of atrocious news from Sony by leaving are being tempted back with a hefty price cut. If you’ve been blissfully ignorant of the recent drama, Sony recently announced it plans to move away from physical releases, an update that has gone down about as well as a fart in a lift.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sony also refused to rule out further price increases for PlayStation Plus. Given the barrage of bad news, many subscribers decided enough was enough, and opted to leave once and for all. Clearly, Sony planned for this eventuality, as they’ve been offering select gamers an incentive to stick around a while.

Over on the PlayStation Plus subreddit, one gamer reported receiving an offer for 50 percent off the next three months of PS Plus after they tried canceling their subscription.

“In protest to Sony going all digital, I tried to cancel my subscription,” they explained. “But they hit me with a 50 percent off if I resubscribe.”

To be clear, it doesn’t look like everyone is getting this offer when they try to cancel. Some subscribers aren’t getting any kind of offer at all, while others are being given different offers.

“I was offered 25% off for 12 months of Premium,” one user commented. “And that’s after redeeming another offer for extending my sub back in February.”

I would assume it comes down to how long you’ve been subscribed to PlayStation Plus, but if you want to see if you’re able to get an offer, you’ll need to go into your account and try to cancel your subscription first. For some gamers, however, these offers are too little, too late.

“I didn’t take the bait,” one (former) fan wrote. “Not supporting Sony with a single dime until they reverse this fiasco.”

I’d certainly back trying to get whatever discount you can now, as another PS Plus price increase seems all but guaranteed given the rising costs of… well, everything.

A translated Sony Q&A from June, featuring Sony CEO and President Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Finance and Corporate Development Lynn Azar, and Studio Business CEO Hermen Hulst touched on yet more price increases for the subscription service, confirming they’re not impossible. Mind you, the price was already increased yet again in May this year, so I’m not sure how much more expensive PlayStation Plus can get.
