The first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, have arrived, creating buzz online. After early screenings, critics and industry insiders are describing the film as a monumental achievement and one of the director’s finest achievements. As the film prepares for its July 17 release, the makers have been conducting a global press tour, with a recent premiere in London followed by stops in Paris, Mumbai, New York, Beijing, and Seoul.

Social media has been flooded with praise for Nolan’s ambitious vision, with early viewers calling the film “flawless filmmaking.” One early reaction read, “THE ODYSSEY is monumental. This is Nolan operating on a singular, accelerated level. Its spectacular cast, practical effects and gigantic scale come together to create a spin on Homer’s epic that might surprise people. A beautiful cinematic achievement, and a true masterpiece.” Another reviewer shared a similar sentiment, stating, “THE ODYSSEY is a filmmaking feast. A grand and gripping rendition of Homer’s epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan.”

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of THE ODYSSEY is as epic as movies get with some of the most breathtaking set pieces he’s ever attempted. A colossal achievement of scale, even by Nolan’s standards, its commitment to capturing as much as possible in-camera using new IMAX cameras… pic.twitter.com/UOOHd6lkbT

Beyond the scale, viewers praised the emotional depth of the performances. Matt Damon, who stars as Odysseus, has been singled out as a standout. One reviewer mentioned, “Matt Damon absolutely owns the role of Odysseus. You feel every loss, every mistake, and every victory with him.” The ensemble cast has also received acclaim, with particular attention given to Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. Robert Pattinson, in particular, has become a fan favourite, with one viewer writing, “Robert Pattinson absolutely stole the show for me. He’s so conniving, manipulative and endlessly entertaining to watch. Pattinson leans all the way into the character’s villainy, and it results in one of my favourite performances of his.”

THE ODYSSEY is a staggering achievement. It boasts spectacular & even terrifying set pieces that feel like Christopher Nolan fully embracing the horrors of Greek mythology. Yet, how he tastefully recontextualizes the story for the modern day is what has kept my head buzzing (1/2) pic.twitter.com/x1GJbwSOEK

Critics have also praised the technical craftsmanship, mentioning that the use of IMAX cameras elevates the experience. Others were surprised by the film’s darker tone, with one reaction observing, “What really surprised me is how much he embraces horror. Some of the film’s biggest moments are genuinely unsettling, adding a whole new dimension to his filmmaking while never losing sight of the humanity at the story’s core.”
