Reese Witherspoon’s new Prime Video TV show is already taking audiences by storm.
Witherspoon’s new TV show, Elle, has debuted to a solid audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Serving as a prequel to Legally Blonde, the series stars Lexi Minetree as a younger Elle Woods, exploring her life as a high school student in Seattle, Washington six years before the events of the original movie. While the show was released in July 2026, it’s already been renewed for season 2, which has already been filmed as of writing. While Witherspoon doesn’t star in the series, as she did in previous Legally Blonde movies, she does serve as an executive producer.
Now, Rotten Tomatoes reports that Elle has earned considerable praise from audiences, debuting to a solid score that indicates widespread enjoyment of the new Legally Blonde series. As of writing, the show holds a 74% from audiences on the website based on fewer than 50 reviews. According to viewers, the show emphasizes ’90s nostalgia while creating a fun story about getting out of your comfort zone. While some felt the series was a bit too by-the-numbers, most enjoyed it for what it is.
Since Elle season 2 has already been filmed, more is on the way regardless of how well season 1 was received. However, audiences seem to have generally positive opinions about the series, which is a good sign for its confirmed future. As for critic reviews of Elle season 1, the consensus isn’t as positive. As of writing, the show holds a 55% Rotten Tomatoes score with critics based on 38 reviews. While this is just under the 60% threshold for a fresh rating, it indicates the series didn’t mesh well with professionals.
Still, audiences and viewership determine if a series will continue or not. Given the promising audience score the show received, it appears viewers are happy with the way Elle portrays its characters and how it ties into the larger Legally Blonde universe. The prequel series was created by Laura Kittrell, who also serves as showrunner alongside Caroline Dries. The eight-episode series is just the start for the prequel show, which aims to continue exploring Elle’s life before Harvard in season 2.
Although she doesn’t reprise her role, Witherspoon’s involvement in the show has been critical from the very beginning. The actor and executive producer has previously stated the show was somewhat inspired by Wednesday, taking a familiar character and dropping them into a high school setting for a new type of storyline. Based on its reception, the show has clearly demonstrated how well it’s managed to make this work, with a whole host of new and exciting characters who constantly interact with Elle herself.
With Elle season 2 confirmed and filmed, the audience score is a positive sign for the series’ future. Since most enjoyed seeing the series play out, it’s likely to maintain success going into its next season. Although it’s unclear what the broader future may hold for the show, it appears poised to leave a strong impression no matter the case.
