Veteran Malayalam actor, comedian, writer and director Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night at the age of 56. The actor breathed his last at a private hospital in Kochi, where he had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia and related health complications. His death was confirmed at 10.43 pm, bringing to a close a career that spanned nearly three decades and transformed the landscape of Malayalam cinema.
According to reports, Salim Kumar suffered a heart attack while receiving treatment. In recent years, the actor had been grappling with a number of health issues, particularly liver-related ailments. He had previously undergone a liver transplant and had openly spoken about his battle with liver cirrhosis, clarifying that the condition was hereditary and not the result of alcohol consumption. He had also reflected on how certain unverified treatments pursued during his illness had worsened his condition.
From Mimicry Stages To Malayalam Cinema Stardom
Born on October 10, 1969, in North Paravur in Ernakulam district, Salim Kumar began his artistic career as a mimicry artist. A graduate of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, he gained recognition through stage performances and television comedy programmes before making his film debut with Ishtamanu Nooru Vattam in 1997.
The actor soon emerged as one of the defining comic performers of Malayalam cinema’s most commercially successful era. Throughout the 2000s, he delivered a string of memorable performances in films such as Thenkasipattanam, Ee Parakkum Thalika, Meesa Madhavan, CID Moosa, Pulival Kalyanam, Chathikkatha Chanthu, Mayavi and Hallo.
Many of the characters he portrayed transcended the films themselves to become part of Kerala’s popular culture. Whether it was the flamboyant Dance Master Vikram, the eccentric Manavalan, the lovable Omanakkuttan or the unforgettable Kannan Srank, Salim Kumar possessed a rare ability to turn supporting roles into some of the most discussed elements of a film. His impeccable timing, expressive body language, and distinct dialogue delivery made him one of Malayalam cinema’s most beloved entertainers.
A Performer Who Redefined Himself
While audiences adored him as a comedian, Salim Kumar consistently demonstrated remarkable range as an actor. His performance in director Kamal’s Perumazhakkalam revealed a dramatic depth that many had not previously associated with him. That transition continued with several critically acclaimed performances that established him as far more than a comic actor.
His role in Achanurangatha Veedu earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor, while his career reached a historic milestone with Adaminte Makan Abu. His restrained and deeply moving portrayal in the film won him the National Film Award for Best Actor, making him one of the few performers to successfully bridge mainstream comedy and award-winning dramatic cinema at the highest level.
Beyond acting, Salim Kumar explored filmmaking as a writer and director. He made his directorial debut with Compartment in 2015. His story for Karutha Joothan won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story, further highlighting his creative versatility. He later directed Daivame Kaithozham K Kumar Akanam starring Jayaram.
Although health concerns led him to significantly reduce his acting commitments in recent years, he continued to remain connected to cinema. His final screen appearance came in director Baiju Ezhupunna’s Koodothram.
Salim Kumar is survived by his wife Sunitha and their two sons, Chandu and Aaromal. Chandu is an actor too, and has appeared in films like Manjummel Boys and Lokah.
With his passing, Malayalam cinema loses a performer whose journey was defined by constant reinvention. Few actors have managed to excel with equal conviction in comedy, drama, writing and direction. His work, however, will continue to live on through the countless characters that brought laughter, empathy and humanity to generations of viewers.
