Supergirl Director Reportedly Circling Sci-Fi Thriller Starring Glen Powell

Craig Gillespie may have already found his next major project following the release of Supergirl.

Gillespie has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors thanks to a filmography that includes I, Tonya, Cruella, Lars and the Real Girl, and Dumb Money. Most recently, he made his debut in the new DC Universe with Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. While the comic book movie marks one of the biggest projects of his career to date, it appears the director could be heading in a very different direction for his next feature.

According to Deadline, Gillespie is currently in talks to direct Homewreckers, an upcoming sci-fi thriller being developed by Legendary Pictures. Glen Powell is attached to star in and produce the project, which is based on a novella by Neil M. Paik. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the film has been described as an erotic thriller with a science-fiction twist.

The project first generated attention in late 2024 when Legendary won a competitive bidding war for the rights package. Paik is also adapting the screenplay and producing the film.

For Powell, Homewreckers represents another intriguing addition to what has become one of Hollywood’s hottest careers. After scene-stealing performances in Top Gun: Maverick and Hit Man, the actor has rapidly evolved into one of the industry’s most in-demand leading men. His recent projects have demonstrated a willingness to jump between genres, from romantic comedy and action to darker material.

Gillespie and Powell’s pairing could prove especially promising given their respective strengths. Gillespie has built a career around character-driven stories that mix humor, drama, and heightened genre elements, while Powell has repeatedly shown an ability to balance charisma with more complicated and flawed characters. That combination could be an ideal fit for a project that is meant to blend erotic thriller conventions with science-fiction concepts.

Homewreckers would also mark Gillespie’s first feature project following Supergirl, one of the most anticipated entries in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, with the cast also including Jason Momoa as Lobo, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze.

Inspired by Tom King’s acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series, the movie follows Kara as she embarks on a cosmic journey alongside Ruthye, a young alien girl seeking revenge against the man who murdered her father.

For Gillespie, Supergirl represented a major step into blockbuster franchise filmmaking after years of balancing prestige dramas and studio projects. Whether Homewreckers ultimately becomes his next film or not, the reported attachment suggests the director is continuing to seek out distinctive genre stories that combine strong character work with larger commercial appeal.

For now, the film remains in the early stages, and Gillespie’s involvement has not yet been officially finalized. However, if the deal closes, the film would unite one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars with a filmmaker fresh off a major superhero blockbuster. With Powell continuing to expand his range and Gillespie looking beyond the DC Universe, Homewreckers is already shaping up to be one of the more intriguing sci-fi projects currently in development.

Supergirl is now playing in theaters.
