Supernatural is one of the longest-running fantasy franchises of all time, surpassing expectations by changing from a monster of the week format to an epic saga that brought many fans to tears by the final episode. This would likely not have been possible without the chemistry between the main cast members, who have been just as passionate about the series as many fans have over Supernatural‘s 15 seasons. This unique partnership allowed Supernatural to include in-jokes, “meta” scenes, and fan service that even extended past the show when its three main actors appeared in The Boys.
Supernatural‘s ending was divisive, but it is a testament to the show’s popularity that people still want to see more, even after the ending wrapped the main plot points and did not include a major cliffhanger. This does not just apply to fans, with creator Eric Kripke saying that he would return to Supernatural with the right story, Jensen Ackles also ready to play Dean Winchester again, and Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) sharing his idea for a Supernatural reboot that would be a limited series run. With the possibility confirmed, it appears that the timing might hinge on one actor.
Jensen Ackles’ Commitments To The Boys May Be Holding Up A Supernatural Reunion
When Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins announced their Supernatural reunion in The Boys with a video clip, the moment quickly went viral on social media. Unfortunately, while The Boys included a Supernatural reference, the reunion scene was not as groundbreaking as it had the potential to be and Soldier Boy’s ending was underwhelming. That said, The Boys confirmed that this was not the end for the character, and Soldier Boy will appear in The Boys‘ spinoff, Vought Rising.

The highly-anticipated prequel series is set to be released in 2027, which is great news for fans of The Boys but not such an optimistic sign for people looking forward to a Supernatural reboot. Ackles confirmed that the one thing getting in the way of Supernatural season 16 was his filming schedule with Amazon, telling Collider that “Amazon’s keeping me pretty busy.” While the interview took place before his cop drama Countdown was canceled, Ackles’ schedule remains full as Vought Rising is expected to run for multiple seasons.
A Longer Hiatus Isn’t Necessarily A Bad Thing For Supernatural
Jared Padalecki is not the only Supernatural actor with ideas for a reboot, as Castiel actor Misha Collins has a brilliant pitch for Supernatural season 16, centering on time travel and parallel dimensions. This is not the strangest concept that has been explored in the series, and while the team involved in Supernatural have regularly joked about ways to bring it back, it illustrates the fact that the series has left a legacy that is still on their minds.
Still, it cannot be ignored that Supernatural already has Sam and Dean’s next spinoff in the form of the graphic novel SUPERNATURAL: WAYWARD SPECIAL #1. As this is set to lay the groundwork for a possible season 6 of the show, some have speculated that the book is serving as a soft launch for the much-requested reboot. This will also give fans something to set the scene, as a return to the world of Supernatural would still take time, no matter what form a reboot takes. That said, this could be a good thing.
The fan reaction to the Supernatural references in The Boys reunion episode proves that the demand for more from the iconic series is still high. As Supernatural was starting to grow stale towards the end, Kripke’s decision to find the right story to tell before committing to a reboot feels wise. A longer wait will make fans even hungrier for more, and offers plenty of opportunity for teasers from the main cast, who might be just as excited as the show’s fans.
