The Red Woman Officially Announced

While HBO’s Game of Thrones had an absolutely unforgettable cast of character actors that have become inseparable from their original roles, some of these characters are undisputed fan-favorites. One such character is the stunning Melisandre, portrayed by the legendary Carice van Houten. As the mysterious Red Woman, Melisandre became one of the series’ most fascinating and unpredictable figures, arriving as a fanatical priestess of R’hllor who genuinely believed Stannis Baratheon was destined to save the world.

Her most unforgettable moments ranged from giving birth to the shadow assassin that killed Renly Baratheon and burning Shireen at the stake to resurrecting Jon Snow and ultimately helping defeat the White Walkers during the Battle of Winterfell. Much of Melisandre’s appeal came from the mystique surrounding her origins in Asshai, as well as her supernatural abilities, prophetic visions, seeming immortality, and connection to the Lord of Light.

Carice van Houten brought the character from George R.R. Martin’s novels to life in unimaginable ways, and thanks to a brand-new announcement, Melisandre is making an official return in Game of Thrones: The Red Woman (via GoTL).

The Red Woman Returns To Game Of Thrones This Month

The Red Woman is a newly announced summons for the critically acclaimed mobile RPG, Game of Thrones: Legends. Available starting September 2 at 3:00AM Eastern, Melisandre officially returns with a brand-new skill that makes her “immune to Poison and Brittle while turning the battlefield into a relentless inferno.”

Further, her new skills in Legends will allow her to “[strike] enemies with Skill Critical Damage” that has a chance to set them on fire, “while clearing Power-Ups up to twice per turn automatically afflicts her targets with additional Fire.”

The Red Woman is one of three new Champions announced for this month in Game of Thrones: Legends alongside the infamous Joffrey Baratheon from Game of Thrones and Egg: The Bald Boy Squire from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. All three Champions will feature brand-new skills and wield iconic items based on their appearances from across the franchise.

The Red Woman Champion in Legends pays homage to Melisandre in an amazing way, seeing as she’s arguably one of the most powerful and unforgettable characters from the series and the novels. She’s empowered in this Legends update with her mysterious Ruby Necklace, a truly iconic item from the show.

As a character across the franchise, Melisandre can see possible futures in the flames, survive poison, create terrifying shadow assassins, manipulate appearances, and seemingly live forever thanks to her magical necklace. More importantly, her power appears closely tied to R’hllor and the larger supernatural conflict surrounding the Long Night. While the books deliberately leave some of her abilities mysterious, very few characters demonstrate such a broad range of genuine supernatural feats as The Red Witch herself.
