It’s not often that filmmakers run the risk of changing a movie’s legacy by making a follow-up feature when the first one is so highly regarded. But that’s what’s happening to one of the 21st century’s greatest masterpieces, as a sequel officially hits theaters this week after the story has stood alone for over 15 years.

Lists of the best movies of the 21st century often include a handful of titles so great that their inclusion is never up for debate. Parasite, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and Moonlight are but a few examples. One thing they all have in common, beyond winning Oscars, is that the stories have never been revisited with sequels.

The Social Network is another undisputedly sensational 21st-century movie. The movie about Facebook’s beginnings is heralded for David Fincher’s excellent direction, Aaron Sorkin’s incredible writing, a pitch-perfect performance from Jesse Eisenberg, a brilliant score, and its examination of power and digital evolution. It’s existed for 16 years as a wonderful, engaging piece of cinema.

However, The Social Network is no longer a singular story. Sorkin rekindled his interest in Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg to add a new chapter to this saga, The Social Reckoning, which hits theaters this Friday, October 9, 2026. While many parts have changed, it now continues the narrative with the pressure of living up to a masterpiece.

The Social Reckoning Continues The Social Network’s Story

After following Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin’s friendship as it dissolves as Facebook grew in popularity, The Social Reckoning picks up the story to show what has happened to the social media empire and its founder. The sequel is set over a decade after The Social Network ends and focuses on The Wall Street Journal‘s 2021 reports about leaked Facebook documents.

Zuckerberg is once again a major presence in The Social Reckoning, but he is no longer the main character. The film’s primary focus shifts to Facebook engineer Frances Haugen and reporter Jeff Horwitz as they work to publish the leaks. Mikey Madison portrays Frances, while Jeremy Allen White plays Jeff. Jesse Eisenberg doesn’t return as Zuckerberg, with Jeremy Strong replacing him.

That isn’t the only replacement happening. Fincher did not come back to direct the sequel, with Sorkin taking on those duties himself. But thanks to the Facebook-centric plot and examination of Zuckerberg, The Social Reckoning is directly linked to The Social Network, even if it doesn’t feel like a traditional sequel.

Will The Social Reckoning Live Up To The Social Network?

Sorkin and Sony linking The Social Reckoning to the 2010 masterpiece is understandable on several levels, but it does increase the pressure on the 2026 drama. There will be expectations for the sequel to be as good as The Social Network and a feeling that it needs to justify continuing a story that already had a perfect conclusion.

Living up to The Social Network is no easy task. The movie was a major box office hit, grossing $225 million against a $40 million budget. It was also a critical darling, giving it a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 95 on Metacritic. The movie then received eight Oscar nominations, winning three, including for Sorkin’s screenplay. Beyond those metrics of success, The Social Network has grown in stature, becoming a defining film of the century.

The odds are certainly against The Social Reckoning being a better or more successful movie than the original. However, the sequel doesn’t have to be a greater achievement or another masterpiece to be a worthy continuation. It just needs to show that Sorkin’s vision and passion for exploring this additional part of Facebook’s history was necessary. If it can do that, The Social Reckoning can add to The Social Network‘s already rich legacy.
