Xbox’s Confusing U-Turn On Exclusives Is Frustrating Gamers

It’s looking like Xbox may already be backing off one of its most celebrated promises—the return of exclusives to the platform—made during its yearly Showcase event. Naturally, fans are starting to be upset by all the back and forth.

During the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, CEO Asha Sharma highlighted a number of exciting updates for the popular gaming platform, including a new anniversary hardware collection, major first-party reveals, exciting third-party surprises, and, of course, the talk of the hour: the return of exclusivity to the platform. As of now, Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution have been announced as completely exclusive to the Xbox and PC ecosystem, meaning these titles won’t ever make their way to PlayStation or any other platform. Not even after the usual 6–12 month window, since these aren’t timed exclusives either.

The green Xbox logo is superimposed a green crumpled background.

That being said, in an interview with Fortune Conversations, Sharma seemingly backtracked slightly on the promises she made during the Showcase. When asked about Xbox’s decision to pivot back toward exclusives instead of embracing a multiplatform approach, she highlighted the brand’s position within the industry and noted that, as much as being multiplatform makes it “stronger,” establishing itself as a platform is equally essential.

“Look, I think that we are the number two publisher in the world, and when you do that, you want your games to be everywhere. You’re stronger when the world plays with you. At the same time, we are increasingly becoming more of a platform, and it’s hard to find examples of platforms out there that don’t have exclusive services and content.”

While this sounds like a reasonable answer, what came next had the fandom on alert.

“Our business isn’t particularly healthy, as you noted, and so we’re starting by introducing one to two signature exclusives and, as the business becomes healthier, we will look to try and do more,” Sharma said, concluding her answer.

Naturally, the interview made its way to Reddit’s most popular gaming pages, and fans are disheartened and annoyed, to say the least. Reddit user Remy0507 commented, “Didn’t they just promise a ‘steady stream of exclusives’ like two days ago? And now it’s, ‘We’ll try to do some exclusives. Maybe. If we can.’ It’s kind of hard to take anything they say seriously when the messaging is all over the place…”, with several others echoing the same sentiment.

GIThrow highights a list of issues with Xbox’s game plan, one of them being its decision to port everything to PC instead of making games that are purely console-exclusive. “They’re going to try this half-assed exclusive initiative, realize that nothing has changed, and start porting to PlayStation again,” the fan said. They also pointed to Xbox’s absence in promising European and Asian markets, its lack of language localization efforts in games, and the brand’s tendency to listen to random feedback instead of constructive, data-backed criticism.

Dbr3000, meanwhile, discusses how their reluctance to trust anything Xbox promises these days.

“At this point, why would any consumer believe anything this company says about the future of XBOX? They’ve changed course so many times it just feels like they’re vibe-strategizing. Unless you have plenty of disposable income (an increasingly smaller pool of customers), buying an XBOX seems like a very unsure bet on a hardware platform that might be completely irrelevant two years from now.”

At the same time, some fans did support Asha, suggesting that her statement isn’t very different from what she said during the Showcase. Then again, a majority of them seem to have already lost faith in the exclusivity promise.

It certainly looks like Xbox is planning to embrace the idea of exclusivity in the future. However, players likely won’t be seeing a large number of exclusive games in the near future, as Asha and the team are clearly testing the waters and don’t want to be knee-deep in the idea just yet.
