In case you hadn’t been keeping count, The Legend of Zelda is celebrating 40 years as a franchise this year, and that puts it in some pretty rarified air as far as video games go. As part of that momentous occasion, fans had been expecting some big announcements from Nintendo, but things weren’t looking too exciting until the other day, when they confirmed the upcoming release of a remake of Ocarina of Time.

That game obviously needs no introduction for most, and releasing it with some fresh features and new visuals in 2026 is more than likely going to serve as a license to print money. The reveal at the Nintendo Direct was an exciting moment no doubt, but it was lacking in one key element, and fans are divided on whether the developer took the right approach in this first instance.

Over on Twitter/X, Nintendo shared a post featuring a brief trailer for the upcoming game, in which Link cam briefly be seen asleep, as he is at the start of the original. It’s undoubtedly Ocarina of Time, but the lack of any gameplay, or even a real look at the approach they’re taking to the remake has left some fans questioning exactly why the company went about announcing the game as they did.

“‘Hey can we see Ocarina of Time gameplay?’ ‘No, here’s five minutes of thumb wrestling,'” one comment read, sarcastically.

“Literally showed us nothing but a model of Link that looks like it’s from Unreal Engine lmao,” another added.

Over on Reddit, there was a lot of similar sentiment from the community, with many wondering just how far Nintendo has gone with their changes to the game.

“That was the most Nintendo way to announce OoT remake lol, we’ll tell you more later bye,” one comment read.

While another said, “I’m still indifferent because we saw literally nothing of the actual game, but thank god it’s coming out this year. I am always irrationally annoyed when something is announced with no date, or like ‘Here’s our new game. The release window is 6-9 years from next year.'”

Given that it’s scheduled to come out later this year, and Nintendo wouldn’t want to deal with a delay for a franchise as iconic as Zelda, we should hear more about what exactly this latest iteration of Ocarina of Time is going to be like soon. Let’s just hope it lives up to the memories that people still hold for the original game, even if it’s only in a small way.
