31 Years Later, Robert De Niro’s Best Heat Line Is Still A Top 5 All Time Crime Movie Quote

Robert De Niro owns one of the best quotes in crime movie history, a genre he knows quite well, and more than three decades later, this Heat line still stands as a top 5 quote, if not the one at the top of the list. De Niro is one of the biggest actors Hollywood has ever had. While he also found success in other genres, crime is his best.

There have been far too many excellent crime movies featuring the actor for me to just go about naming them all here. De Niro is a genre legend, and one who has just returned to it. Those looking for new movies to watch on Netflix will find potentially the biggest selection right now to be The Whisper Man, which brings De Niro back to the crime thriller genre.

At the time of writing, The Whisper Man stands as the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. That got me thinking about De Niro’s many contributions to the genre, including his magnetic role as Neil McCauley in Heat. With Michael Mann’s Heat 2 set to continue that world soon, the timing is just right to revisit all that the film did for the genre.

Heat is one of the greatest crime movies to date, with a stellar cast that includes names like De Niro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Natalie Portman, and more. Heat was also written and directed by Mann, who has been nominated for and won multiple awards for his writing, including a Best Adapted Screenplay nom for The Insider. As such, Heat has some killer quotes.

Robert De Niro’s Neil McCauley Gave Us A Lasting Crime Movie Rule In Heat

That said, the best Heat line and an easy top 5 when it comes to the crime movie genre, comes from De Niro’s Neil McCauley. De Niro’s character, a career thief, turns to Val Kilmer’s Chris Shiherlis for a stern talk about how Chris’ tumultuous relationship with his wife, Ashley Judd’s Charlene, could attract, well, unwanted heat for their crew. This is when Neil lays down the line of law for this type of career, explaining the code he follows and how Chris needs to re-evaluate his life choices. Check out De Niro’s iconic Heat quote below:

“Don’t let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.”

Neil’s quote is not only great in the context of the movie, as he perfectly explains to Chris exactly how he should change and lets the audience know exactly what kind of man McCauley is early in the movie, but it also really speaks to how the entire genre operates, as the quote serves as a perfect encapsulation of what kind of choices people leading the same criminal lives the characters in Heat are leading must make, as well as the cost that comes with choosing that life. This crime rule holds true for many releases of the genre.

De Niro’s Heat Character Broke His Own Rule – And Made The Quote Better

That quote became even more iconic by the end of Heat. When McCauley was living life by his strict code, everything was fine. However, De Niro’s character ends up falling in love with Amy Brenneman’s Eady, and when the heat catches up to him, he decides to escape with her to New Zealand. In addition to that, McCauley embarks on a revenge mission to kill Waingro, who betrayed him and the crew. While he succeeds, that is precisely what eventually gets him killed, as this event gave plenty of time for Pacino’s Vincent Hanna to find and shoot him.

As such, it is ironic that by breaking his rule twice, first forming an attachment to Eady and then putting himself at unnecessary risk based on his strong emotional connection to killing Waingro, McCauley causes his downfall. In the end, he was right about that strict rule, and had De Niro’s character kept following to the end of the movie, Heat would have had a completely different ending.
