Prime Video has officially ordered a new series titled Sex Criminals, an adaptation of the popular Image Comics series of the same name.
Based on the Eisner Award-winning series by iconic creators Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals, the TV show is being adapted by Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick), and Tze Chun (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai). Nanjiani will also star in the upcoming series.
The story follows Suze, a woman who has a strange power. Time stands still whenever she has sex. One day, she meets Jon, who is also experiencing the same phenomenon. The duo quickly realize how much their “gift” could benefit them, but not in a way that’s good for anyone else. The two decide to go on a crime spree and rob banks.
Chun, who also serves as a producer for Prime Video’s iteration of Sex Criminals, revealed that he has been a big fan of the comics since their debut in 2013. He added that he has been wanting to do a screen adaptation of the series for around a decade now, saying that this project is a dream come true for him.
I’ve been a fan of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals since the first issue hit the stands. This has been my dream project for over a decade, and co-creating this show with Emily and Kumail has been one of the creative highlights of my career. We are so excited to bring this series to life with our incredible partners at Lucky Chap and Prime Video.
Gordon and Nanjiani issued a joint statement praising the series. They explained that they knew they wanted to be a part of the Prime Video show from the moment the idea was brought to them. They also expressed their excitement about bringing the characters to life on screen.
Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places. From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.
Sex Criminals is a critically acclaimed series and has accomplished more than just winning an Eisner. The comics also won a Harvey Award and were named the best comic book series of the year by Time Magazine. Fraction and Zdarsky are also well-known and respected creators in the comic book industry, both of whom have major titles under their belts and independent series.
Zdarsky is the writer behind the current ongoing run of Captain America. He wrote for DC Comics, leading a Batman run that many believed to be a game-changer and changed The Dark Knight for the better. Along with writing, he is also an artist, providing cover art for many series and is the main artist of Sex Criminals. Meanwhile, Fraction is working on the current run of Batman. He has also written several X-Men series, as well as Doctor Strange and Fantastic Four.
There is no confirmed release date for Prime Video’s Sex Criminals at the time of this article’s publication. The original series, which concluded in 2020, is available to purchase at local comic book stores, on Kindle, and Google Play.
