First launching back in 2007 with the arrival of Mass Effect, the sci-fi franchise created by Casey Hudson quickly became hailed as one of the greatest of all time. Set in the not-so-distant future where humans and aliens alike have colonized the galaxy using technology left behind by previous civilizations, the story follows Commander Shepard as they attempt to save the galaxy from an ancient alien race known as the Reapers.

Crop of Mass Effect concept art called Krogan Civil War, showing a Krogan firing a gun with one hand.

Following the success of Mass Effect, sequels soon followed and now, at the time of writing, the main franchise consists of four mainline entries. That being said, the first three games are often hailed as the Mass Effect Trilogy, whilst the most recent entry, Mass Effect: Andromeda, is something of an outlier, both when it comes to story and fan reception.

With a fifth game expected to be in active development, BioWare is keeping quiet when it comes to what we can expect from the continuation of the hit sci-fi franchise, but in the meantime, fans can look forward to an exciting new release launching in 2027.

Announced back in November 2025 to celebrate the annual N7 Day, fans were treated to their first look at an updated Mass Effect The Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz. Created by Modiphius Entertainment, a new range of highly detailed 32mm resin miniatures were added to the game, and are expected to release in Q2 of 2026.

According to the press release, the new miniature sets consist of the following:

    • Priority Threats Delta
    • Priority Threats Gamma
    • Priority Threats Epsilon
    • Battlefield Scenery Alpha
    • Battlefield scenery Beta
    • ATLAS Mech and Marker
    • YMIR Mech and Marker
    • Brute and Marker

For those unfamiliar with the board game, Mass Effect the Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz is a 1-4 player experience designed by Eric M. Lang and Calvin Wong Tze Loon. Offering branching narratives and a campaign that encourages multiple playthroughs, no two games will be the same as players embark on up to 14 missions across the galaxy. Featuring some of our favorite characters such as Liara, Tali, Wrex, and Garrus, players can use cards to perform actions, as well as customize and upgrade your squad’s abilities, equipment, and powers.

Not only will the brand-new update come alongside new miniature sets, but Modiphius has also revealed that it is working on a new expansion for Mass Effect the Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz. Set to launch in 2027, this expansion will introduce six new squadmates as well as new ways to approach each playthrough. Not only that, but it will arrive alongside new missions and enemy groups.

Put simply, it is an exciting time for fans of the Mass Effect franchise, especially those who enjoy having friends around and putting their board game skills to use.
