Matthew McConaughey’s New Crime Thriller Makes True Detective Look Small

While Matthew McConaughey’s performance in True Detective season 1 remains one of his best roles to date, one upcoming crime thriller movie from the star could outdo even this iconic role. The highs and lows of Matthew McConaughey’s screen career deserve to be studied. Originally emerging as a supporting star in the early ‘90s, with a breakout role in 1993’s dramedy Dazed and Confused followed by a disastrous villainous part in 1995’s The Return of the Chainsaw Massacre, McConaughey soon became a tough actor to pin down.

Major successes like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days seemingly proved he was made for rom-coms, only for flops like Failure to Launch and Fool’s Gold to refute this. Movies like Amistad and Frailty established him as a serious dramatic actor, only for the star to then blow his critical reputation on massive flops like Tiptoes and Sahara. It wasn’t until the arrival of 2014’s True Detective season 1, and McConaughey’s role as Rust Cohle that his path truly became clear.

In a stark departure from his earlier goofy surfer dude screen persona, Harrelson stunned critics as the traumatized pessimist Cohle in 2014’s grim crime thriller. A less self-assured actor could have turned Cohle into an uber-edgy, laughably self-serious protagonist, but McConaughey’s surprisingly detached take on the character was authentically moving and grounded the HBO hit even as its plot grew gradually more dramatic and grisly. Now, 2026’s upcoming movie, The Rivals of Amziah King, promises to offer McConaughey’s biggest crime thriller ever, with a plot that eclipses the earlier HBO show.

The Rivals of Amziah King Is One of the Most Ambitious Crime Thrillers In Years

True Detective season 1 was never lacking in vision, with its plot spanning two decades and focusing on a sprawling criminal conspiracy involving political elites, corrupt cops, the DEA, the FBI, and many more factions. However, 2026’s buzzy Neo-Western movie The Rivals of Amziah King, the sophomore effort from The Vast of Night director Andrew Patterson, has the show beat with a plot that is even more ambitious despite the movie’s shorter runtime.

With critics praising its genre-blurring plotting and sprawling scope, The Rivals of Amziah King is currently being hailed as both a taut crime thriller and a massively ambitious, successful epic. That is a tough pairing to pull off, but the story of McConaughey’s titular foster parent/singing beekeeper and his troubled charge somehow mixes elements from crime thrillers, musicals, detective dramas, westerns, and film noir into an utterly unique instant classic.

Even though the popularity of the Yellowstone franchise and Taylor Sheridan’s work more broadly has done a lot to bring back the Neo-Western genre since 2018, there is no denying the fact that The Rivals of Amziah King’s bizarre genre mélange is still a risky one. However, critics have unambiguously come out in favor of the Oklahoma-set story, with both McConaughey and co-star Angelina LookingGlass earning near-universal acclaim for their performances.

Of course, part of the movie’s success could also be credited to McConaughey’s decision to return to one of his most reliable settings. Despite its musical moments, its character drama, and its Western elements, The Rivals of Amziah King is also at its core a Southern Gothic thriller, and that’s a genre where its star has always shone bright.

From The Lincoln Lawyer to The Paperboy to Killer Joe, Mud, and even True Detective itself, McConaughey is a Southern thriller legend. To be fair, plenty of great psychological thrillers are set elsewhere in America. However, the shared success of The Rivals of Amziah King and True Detective season 1 proves Matthew McConaughey remains the king of the Southern potboiler.
