One of Malayalam cinema’s most beloved actor-director partnerships is officially making a comeback. After years of rumours, speculation and fervent fan demand, Nivin Pauly and Alphonse Puthren are set to reunite for a brand-new project, currently being referred to as NP50.
The announcement came directly from Alphonse Puthren, who revealed that the film’s title launch event will be held on June 27 at the iconic Padma Theatre in Kochi. Sharing the update on social media, the filmmaker invited audiences to be part of the occasion, writing, “Come join the gang live at Padma Theatre. Need your love and prayers as always.”
A Reunion Fans Have Been Waiting For
The news has instantly sparked excitement among movie lovers, particularly because of the history shared by the duo. Their previous collaboration, Premam, released in 2015, became one of the defining films of modern Malayalam cinema. Beyond its box-office success, the coming-of-age romance left a lasting impact on popular culture, introducing memorable characters, dialogues and songs that continue to resonate with audiences even today.
While Alphonse later directed Gold, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara, many fans had hoped to see him reunite with Nivin Pauly, whose performances in Neram and Premam played a significant role in establishing the filmmaker’s distinctive voice. With NP50 now moving forward, expectations are understandably high.
Fresh Buzz Around Two Familiar Names
At present, details regarding the plot and supporting cast remain tightly under wraps. However, the announcement alone has been enough to generate considerable anticipation across social media. Given Alphonse Puthren’s reputation for blending humour, romance and relatable emotions with an unconventional storytelling style, many are eager to see what direction the filmmaker takes next.
The project also arrives at an interesting point in both their careers. In recent years, Alphonse has largely stayed away from directing features but has continued to remain visible through acting appearances. One of the most talked-about examples was his role as a police officer in Vaazha 2, where his deadpan humour and sarcastic observations on the education system struck a chord with viewers.
More recently, he appeared in Sarvam Maya, directed by Akhil Sathyan. The fantasy entertainer featured Nivin Pauly as an aspiring musician whose life changes after meeting a friendly ghost named Delulu, played by Riya Shibu. The film emerged as one of the notable commercial successes of the year and further reinforced Nivin’s popularity among family audiences. Nivin, meanwhile, was last seen in Baby Girl, directed by Arun Varma. The actor continues to balance commercial entertainers with character-driven projects, making his reunion with Alphonse particularly intriguing.
For now, all eyes are on June 27, when the curtain will finally be lifted on the project’s official title. Whether NP50 turns out to be a romance, comedy, drama or something entirely unexpected, the reunion of Nivin Pauly and Alphonse Puthren is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Malayalam film developments in recent memory.
