Pixar‘s incredible run at the 2026 box office is great news for its upcoming original film. The 2020s have been fairly hit-or-miss in terms of box-office draw for the legendary animation studio. While Pixar is still making just as many great animated films as ever, financial success is no longer a guarantee by name alone.
Beginning with the 2020s, the COVID-19 pandemic saw the studio’s first three films of the decade relegated to Disney+. Soul, Luca, and Turning Red all received critical acclaim, yet they never had the chance to be seen on the big-screen. This led to many audiences seeing Disney+ as the reliable way to see Pixar films, rather than spending money at the theater.
From there, Pixar has seen a considerable decrease in viewership on the big-screen when it comes to new stories. For example, their first original property since Coco, Elemental, did well at the box office, but it made significantly less than other original films in their filmography.
Elio, in particular, was a complete disappointment for the studio. This has led to speculation that Pixar will shift toward a focus on sequels, since they’ve done infinitely better. However, 2026 has seen a major shift for the studio and their future original films like Gatto, as its box office appeal has seen success for both of its releases this year.
Toy Story 5 And Hoppers Are Both Box Office Hits
This year, Pixar released two new films to theaters: one original, and one sequel. Toy Story 5 has unsurprisingly been a smash hit, pulling in crowds worldwide for the latest chapter in their most iconic franchise. Pixar sequels are well-known for being crowd pleasers as they continue beloved stories while having fan-favorite characters return. As of June 28, it’s grossed more than double its budget and continues to climb.
However, the biggest shock is that Pixar’s original film, Hoppers, has also been a major hit for the studio. While not making nearly as much as Toy Story 5, it still exceeded expectations with over $380 million against a $150 million budget. This is huge for the studio because it shows that there is still a market for their original movies.
This has undeniably been one of Pixar’s best years in recent memory, seeing especially when taking their originals into consideration. After a rough start to the 2020s, Pixar seems to be back with its delightful animated stories that set up a great future for their upcoming films.
Pixar’s Box Office Success Is Great News For Gatto
When looking at the success of Hoppers and Toy Story 5, it’s clear that audience interest in Pixar is back in full force. This is excellent news for the studio’s next project, Gatto, which will be releasing on March 5, 2027. The teaser trailer alone has already pulled in over three million views, drumming up anticipation for this Godfather-like tale with cats.
If Hoppers‘ success is anything to go by, Gatto could continue Pixar’s major swing to success. This could open the gates to the studio returning to focus on original stories while still releasing the occasional sequel.
There are currently two other original films slated on Pixar‘s schedule after Gatto, with sequels still receiving a heavier focus. However, if Gatto can continue the studio’s success by giving them just as great a year as 2026, it could reshape Pixar’s future forever.
