The highly anticipated film Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, is being created on a scale never witnessed before in the country. What makes the project truly extraordinary is the sheer magnitude of its production, making it a historic milestone in filmmaking.

According to reports, over 10,000 crew members are working on the film, making it the largest crew ever assembled for an Indian movie. This massive team covers various critical departments, ranging from production design and visual effects to action choreography and costume design. The film has brought together incredible talent from across the globe to build the world of this ancient epic.

To ensure the film matches international standards, the makers have onboarded several top global technicians and experts from different parts of the world. With cutting-edge technology, massive sets, intricate world-building, and large-scale planning involved, Ramayana is being envisioned as a landmark event film rather than just another movie release. While Indian cinema has delivered many grand spectacles over the years, a production mounted at this specific scale remains completely unprecedented. The project is expected to redefine how mythological stories are presented on the big screen and could potentially set a new benchmark for large-scale filmmaking in India.

The film is being spearheaded by visionary producer and CEO of the eight-time Oscar-winning visual effects studio DNEG, Namit Malhotra. It is being directed by one of India’s most successful award-winning filmmakers, Nitesh Tiwari. Filmed for IMAX, this cinematic universe blends a centuries-old legend, based on the ancient writings of revered Indian poet Valmiki, with breathtaking visuals, setting it up to be one of the most anticipated projects.

The story is a two-part live-action cinematic universe being reimagined on the scale of the biggest projects produced to date. Speaking about his character, Lord Rama at a special promotional event few months ago, Ranbir shared his deep respect for the role. He said, “He stands for compassion, for courage, for righteousness and forgiveness. He is called Maryada Purushottam, which stands for an ideal man.”

Producer Namit Malhotra shared that the project has been approached with “responsibility, devotion and care” to bring the epic to life “in its truest spirit and scale”. He described the massive global effort, stating, “This is a story that belongs to all of us.”

Ramayana Part 1 will release in theatres this Diwali and the part 2 is slated to release in Diwali 2027.
