Robert Downey Jr.’s Confirmed Iron Man Return Comes At The Worst Time

An exciting new project is officially bringing back Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, but his comeback has the worst timing. Seven years after the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame ended the Infinity Saga and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is once again on the cusp of another culminating project. Admittedly, the Multiverse Saga isn’t as seamlessly set up as its predecessor, not to mention how much has already changed in the franchise. Regardless of what the future holds for the MCU, the original core heroes will always be special, particularly its inaugural hero.

Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame was bittersweet. It was sad to see him die, especially when he was leaving a wife and a daughter. On the other hand, it’s difficult to argue against the deeper meaning of his self-sacrifice, considering how his arc started in 2008’s Iron Man. Regardless, Downey Jr.’s genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist has been missed in the seven years since his story wrapped up. The actor’s return as Tony Stark for Avengers Infinity Defense, a ride that is coming to Disney California Adventure in 2028, will fix that issue. Unfortunately, it comes with a major risk.

Iron Man’s Return Announcement Is Bad For Downey Jr.’s Avengers: Doomsday Role

While the Disney California Adventure attraction isn’t coming until 2028, Iron Man’s return snippet has already been revealed, revitalizing interest in the character. Not that the hero ever fell into irrelevancy in the last seven years, but now, there’s increased talk involving him. Overall, this is a good sign of the MCU’s enduring popularity, but it has a bad effect on its future, particularly its upcoming culminating film, Avengers: Doomsday. Directed by returning filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, the project will also see several familiar faces from the Infinity Saga. However, while Chris Evans is simply reprising his role as Steve Rogers, Downey Jr. is playing an entirely new character in Doctor Doom.

Admittedly, Downey Jr.’s recasting was originally met with a divisive response, but people’s opinion on the matter has slowly changed for the better in the last few months, primarily due to the efforts to justify this peculiar creative choice. The MCU’s inaugural actor has been involved in almost every single massive promotional move for the film, and so far, it seems like the correct move. However, after spending months explaining why Doctor Doom is worth returning to the MCU after playing Iron Man for over a decade, all that progress is threatened to be wiped out with the new Iron Man announcement.

Why Avengers: Doomsday’s Success Boils Down To RDJ’s Performance

Several creative decisions for Avengers: Doomsday are evoking nostalgia for long-time followers of the franchise. Considering the less-than-ideal way that Multiverse Saga has played out thus far, it makes sense that Marvel Studios is relying on things that have done for them in the past, including Downey Jr. Playing a new role ensures that Iron Man’s death sticks, but it’s also no secret that it has been difficult to sell the actor playing a different role. Downey Jr.’s true form as Doctor Doom remains under wraps, helping people get used to the idea of him not being Iron Man in the MCU, but it’s curious how it pans out once he takes off the villain’s signature mask.

Robert Downey Jr Already Revealed His 1 Condition To Return As Iron Man

Long before the news broke out that MCU is considering bringing him back, Robert Downey Jr. revealed his condition to returning as Iron Man.

Granted that there are countless moving pieces in making a film, and there are external factors that could impact its box office and critical performance, but arguably the biggest indicator of its success will be how Downey Jr.’s Doom will be received. With barely any character set-up leading to his proper debut, the antagonist is Avengers: Doomsday’s wildcard. If Marvel Studios, the Russos, and Downey Jr. pull this off, then the chances of the project’s success get significantly higher.
