Anime in the present day is an incredibly accessible medium thanks to its prevalence on the streaming market, but that has never truly stopped viewers from discovering its greatest gems, even in prior times. Thanks to a booming home video market, programming from the 1980s and 1990s including OVAs and feature films entered the otaku cultural lexicon with a few names becoming legendary among North American audiences, such as the 1993 cult classic, Ninja Scroll. But now, courtesy of HIDIVE and Iconic Events, the film is coming to theaters in stunning 4K on October 4, 5, and 7 for a limited North American theatrical release.
Ninja Scroll’s three-day limited 4K re-release will come to approximately 600 theaters across the United States and Canada, with subbed and dubbed showings for all audiences. For those looking to get tickets in the US, Iconic Events has a portal available to get tickets, with Canadian audiences encouraged to check their local theater listings online, such as via Cineplex or Landmark Cinemas. In addition to the tickets being available for purchase, AMC Global Media’s HIDIVE has proudly presented ScreenRant with a new exclusive still in addition to other glimpses from Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s legendary 1993 film pitting lone mercenary Jūbei Kibagami alongside the kunoichi Kagerō and spy Dakuan against the Eight Devils of Kimon.
When getting Ninja Scroll fans hyped for the big 4K restoration, it’s a safe bet to do so with stills from one of the best fights of the film, Jūbei Kibagami vs. Mujūrō Utsutsu in the bamboo forest has few competitors. This particular shot of Mujūrō standing over Jūbei is the latest exclusive glimpse given by HIDIVE ahead of the October rerelease, showing the most honorable of the Eight Devils, a blind ronin merely seeking a fair fight to the death. Few confrontations stand as a visual match to this moment, despite other, more fantastical fights occasionally stealing the show.
Ninja Scroll’s big 4K return will bring the mature, ultraviolent spectacle to North American theaters after previously featuring earlier this year at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. It’s a relic of a past anime era prized for its spectacular visuals, making it a landmark achievement for the medium in the 1990s alongside the untouchable animated TV series of the era, so be careful not to miss the chance to see it on the big screen.
