Vismaya Mohanlal has reiterated her support for the student protests in Delhi, making it clear that the criticism she faced online has not altered her views. Weeks after her social media post sparked heated debate, the actor has said she continues to stand by every word she wrote, stressing that empathy and democratic values should never be compromised.
Vismaya says she has no regrets about speaking out
Speaking on FTQ with Rekha Menon, Vismaya reflected on the controversy and explained why she chose to voice her opinion. She said she believes India is a democracy where people should always have the freedom to question, express themselves and be heard. According to her, conversations and dialogue should always take precedence over force when citizens raise concerns. She also asserted that politics should never come before humanity, adding that her position would remain unchanged irrespective of which political party was in power.
Her latest comments reinforce the message she had originally shared on Instagram during the protests. At the time, Vismaya urged people to look beyond political affiliations and reflect on what the events meant for democracy. Her post read, “You don’t have to agree with the protesters. You don’t have to support. But if the response to citizens raising their voices is overwhelming force instead of dialogue, every one of us should stop and ask what kind of democracy we are becoming.”
The statement quickly became the focal point of the online debate, with many praising her call for dialogue while others strongly disagreed with her views. Weeks later, Vismaya has made it clear that the criticism has done little to alter her position.
Social media backlash fails to change her position
The Instagram story quickly became the subject of intense debate online. Vismaya was criticised by a section of social media users, with some accusing her of being misinformed while others resorted to personal attacks. Several comments targeted not only the actor but also her father, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. Some users described her as “an embarrassment” to the veteran actor, while others posted abusive and derogatory remarks directed at both father and daughter.
The controversy also drew reactions from members of the film industry. Filmmaker Major Ravi, who has known Vismaya since she was a child, defended her intentions while offering his own interpretation of the post. He suggested that her comments were unlikely to have been politically motivated, arguing instead that they stemmed from compassion after witnessing the human suffering surrounding the protests. Ravi further remarked that he did not believe she possessed the political awareness required to form a nuanced opinion on such a complex issue.
Despite the criticism and the debate that followed, Vismaya’s latest interview makes it evident that she remains unwavering in her beliefs. Rather than distancing herself from the post, she has reaffirmed her conviction that democratic societies must create space for disagreement, dialogue and peaceful expression.
Although public figures often find themselves under intense scrutiny for expressing political or social opinions, Vismaya’s remarks underline her belief that speaking out on humanitarian concerns should not be viewed through a partisan lens. By insisting that empathy should outweigh political considerations, she has once again positioned her comments as a call for compassion rather than ideological alignment.
Her latest statement is likely to reignite conversations around the balance between freedom of expression, public accountability and the role of celebrities in social and political discourse. For Vismaya, however, the message remains unchanged. Dialogue, she believes, is always stronger than force, and humanity should never take a back seat to politics.
