The X-Men reboot could give one character a redemption after their prior appearance’s failure.

After initially being announced to gradually become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019, development began ramping up on the franchise reboot the past couple of years, particularly with Thunderbolts*‘s Jake Schreier. The new X-Men cast has steadily been growing in recent months, with Sadie Sink debuting as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while August’s D23 brought news of Obsession‘s Inde Navarette being cast as Rogue, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Byrd as Storm, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.

    🐺

    Wolverine (Logan)

“I’m the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn’t very nice.”
You’re the fierce loner who acts first and philosophises later — but beneath that adamantium-plated exterior beats a heart that cares far more than you’d ever admit. You’ve been burned enough times to distrust the world, so you keep people at arm’s length, yet you’d throw yourself into any fight to protect the ones who slip past your defences. You don’t need a cause or a manifesto — you just need someone worth fighting for. Like Logan, your greatest strength isn’t your claws or your healing factor; it’s the stubborn refusal to let the people you love face danger alone.

    Fierce
    Protective
    Resilient
    Untamed

    🧠

    Professor X (Charles Xavier)

“Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.”
You’re the visionary who sees the best in everyone — even when the world gives you every reason not to. Your greatest power isn’t telepathy; it’s an unshakeable belief that understanding and compassion can bridge any divide. You lead not through force but through hope, building bridges where others build walls. Some call you naive, but you know that real strength lies in extending a hand to your enemy. Like Charles Xavier, you carry the weight of a dream that most consider impossible, and you refuse to let it die.

    Visionary
    Empathetic
    Diplomatic
    Hopeful

    🧲

    Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr)

    “Peace was never an option.”
You’re the survivor who learned the hardest lesson life has to offer: the world will not protect you, so you must protect yourself. Your conviction is unbreakable and your patience is terrifying — you’ll wait years to set the right plan in motion. You don’t hate humanity; you simply refuse to let your people be victims ever again. Every action you take, no matter how ruthless, is driven by a profound love for those who share your struggle. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you.

    Resolute
    Strategic
    Ruthless
    Unyielding

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for Practical Magic 2, Maisie Williams shared her hopes to return for the MCU’s X-Men reboot. The two-time Emmy nominee expressed having “really liked playing Rahne,” also known as Wolfsbane,” in the Fox spinoff film The New Mutants, calling for the character to get a redemption after the project failed to resonate with critics or at the box office:

Maisie Williams: We’ve got to bring that back. Maybe it’ll be 28 years after the first, but I think we should.

ScreenRant: No one’s talked to you?

Maisie Williams: I know! [Let’s] get them on the line. What’s the deal?

Joey King: Pick that phone up!

The Game of Thrones alum starred in 2020’s The New Mutants as Rahne Grace Sinclair, one of the young mutants kept locked up in a hospital who struggles to grapple with her werewolf-like transformation powers, as well as her religiously repressive upbringing. All the while, the X-Men spinoff saw Rahne growing closer with Blu Hunt’s Dani and developing a romantic relationship, a shift from the comic book in which she was not depicted as a lesbian.

Williams’ X-Men debut in The New Mutants went through an infamously troubled road to the screen, as behind-the-scenes changes in vision led to differing cuts and various delays. In the wake of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, reshoots were conducted and editing went back to writer/director Josh Boone’s original horror-tinged intent, though the X-Men spinoff was ultimately shuffled out in a limited theatrical run due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where critics were largely dismissive of the final product, and it failed at the box office, grossing just $49.2 million.

12 Other Mutants We Want To See In Marvel’s New X-Men Movie

While we now know a handful of characters confirmed for Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie, there are so many more mutants we’d love to see.

Interestingly, prior to the movie’s release, Boone revealed that he and co-writer Knate Lee had pitched The New Mutants as a trilogy to Fox, with casting plans having included Antonio Banderas and Sacha Baron Cohen. Ultimately, both the movie’s bombing and Disney’s reboot plans scrapped Boone’s ideas, but even still, there have been multiple faces returning amid The Multiverse Saga. Deadpool & Wolverine, most notably, established a direct link to the prior X-Men franchise and the mainline MCU.

Williams isn’t the only former X-Men star to call for a second chance at their role in the upcoming reboot, as both Dominic Monaghan and Lana Condor have expressed their hopes to return as Bolt and Jubilee after their underwhelming debuts. Given Marvel are largely starting from scratch for their new film, it does unfortunately seem unlikely that any of them will get the opportunity to step back into their respective roles. However, with Disney+’s various animated Marvel shows utilizing both MCU and non-MCU stars, the door isn’t entirely closed.
