Movies Got Boring Because They’re Marvel-ized

Meryl Streep is famous for playing complicated characters, with one of her most iconic roles being that of fearsome magazine editor Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada (and now, of course, newly released sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2). In a recent interview with Hits Radio Breakfast Show, she explained that Miranda’s flawed nature is a feature to her, not a bug, because that means the movie has “a realistic view” of the world, adding that “I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains and we got the good guys, and it’s so boring.”

As opposed to movies with a superheroic bent, Streep continued, “what’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths. So that’s what I like about this [movie]. It’s messier.”

Streep was Oscar-nominated for her first appearance as Miranda Priestly and is equally good in the sequel. Read our review of The Devil Wears Prada 2 for more.
