The Monsterverse’s Next Story Raises New Questions About Godzilla & Kong’s History

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 raises new questions about Godzilla and Kong’s shared history in the Monstervere. The Monsterverse iterations of the two pop culture icons first met in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Following two heated battles, the two put aside their differences due to emergence of Mechagodzilla.

They reunited again for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, where they engaged in a rematch. Ultimately, they teamed up again, this time to defeat the combined forces of Shimo and the Skar King. Presumably, they’ll be on the same side a third time when SpaceGodzilla appears in 2027’s Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

Before that day comes, they’ll be together in a different project, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. Paying off Kong’s cameo in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 finale, the series will put a greater focus on Kong in a story that will focus on a new threat known as Titan X. And based on the marketing, Godzilla will still be a big part of the show’s narrative.

Will Godzilla And Kong Meet In Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2?

The apparent relevance of both Titans in season 2 has created some understandable confusion about how it’ll utilize them, considering its placement in the Monsterverse timeline. Season 1’s ending placed the main characters in 2017, which is seven years before Godzilla and Kong’s first fight.

Godzilla vs. Kong was understood to be the first time the two Titans had laid eyes on each other. But with Monarch season 2’s story clearly being one that’s going to heavily incorporate both Godzilla and Kong, it’s worth wondering how it’ll approach their story without violating Monsterverse canon.

How Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2 Can Avoid Breaking Monsterverse Canon

Telling a story set before their first known meeting could be challenging, but it’s not unfeasible. In Godzilla vs. Kong, it was established that Godzilla knew of Kong’s existence and whereabouts. As for Kong, there’s been no onscreen confirmation that he was aware of Godzilla. For that reason, it’s technically possible for them to share the screen, but it’s not clear how that could happen without a fight breaking out.

A more realistic scenario is that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finds a way to keep them on separate trajectories, even if both wind up being drawn into the Titan X conflict. Season 1 juggled multiple plotlines, and season 2 could do something similar, having some of its characters on Skull Island and others closer to Godzilla’s location.

If that were to happen, that would likely lead to the final battle of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 only including one of the Monsterverse’s flagship Titans while the other is unfortunately sidelined. While disappointing, this would effectively allow the Apple TV series to preserve Monsterverse canon.
